TRAVELING TO SAN DIEGO

Welcome to America's Finest City

San Diego is a very popular destination with many lacrosse teams and has some of the best weather and coastal attractions in America. In addition to your game against UC San Diego and other San Diego/Southern California teams, your team may want to visit some of the local beaches or squeeze in a practice or two. Here are few details regarding your future visit.

How to Get to the Fields

There are several freeways in San Diego but the two major freeways to know are Interstate 5 (I-5) which runs North-South and Interstate 8 (I-8) which runs East-West. Most major attractions, hotels, and all the major universities including UCSD, USD, and SDSU are located near these freeways.

All the fields at UCSD are located off of Interstate 5. Exits and directions depend on field location and game time. The link to the map below will give you specific details.

Where to Stay

Map of San Diego's Hotel Locations

UC San Diego is located in La Jolla, one of the most affluent neighborhoods in the United State. As a result, the hotels located closest to campus generally have rates higher than most university athletic programs have budgets for. We recommend that visiting teams stay in Mission Valley's Hotel Circle (8 Miles to UCSD). Hotel Circle has roughly 30 motels and hotels that are located on a single strip of Interstate 8. In addition to competitive rates, Mission Valley is home to two malls, a golf course, and several restaurants (including fast food, sports bars & grills, buffets, and a Dave & Busters). Mission Valley is also close to the University of San Diego, San Diego State University, Sea World, Downtown, and the beaches (all are within 5 miles of Mission Valley).

If you'd like to stay a little closer to the beach, we recommend staying in the Mission Bay/Pacific Beach (5 Miles to UCSD) area. The rates will likely be a little higher than Mission Valley's Hotel Circle but offer direct access to the coast as well as distractions and a night life that the players will love but the coaches may not.

Lastly, if you are intent on staying near the University, you should stay in La Jolla (<3 Miles to UCSD). The hotel prices in La Jolla are likely to be at a premium but the amenities should also be the best available.

Practicing at UCSD

UCSD policy states that the standard cost of renting a lacrosse field at UCSD is $42/Hour (with a 2 hour minimum) for educational institutions (+ proof of insurance provided by your university). Since the fields will already be lined and equiped with goals, there won't be any other costs. Additionally, the university has traditionally allowed teams that have traveled from out of town (to play UCSD) to practice a couple days without paying a fee. However, that agreement has always been a soft arrangement and is subject to change without notification so please budget the fee
